Content was delighted to cohost Fempire – a night of amazing women gathering to connect over marvelous margaritas and fried crickets at Mezcal Restaurant. The event was hosted by Tracy Lee, founder of Dishcrawl, Sheila Bernus-Dowd from Clever Girls Collective and Jenna Tenorio from the Downtown Association.
Next Concert May 19th featuring: The Record Winter, Soft Knife, Rin Tin Tiger, Bonnie & The Bang Bang.

Daydream Nation will highlight our favorite alternative artists emerging out of the Bay Area and San Jose. Coverage of each event will be provided by both S*ALT(www.savealternative.com) and Content Magazine (www.content-magazine.com) Our goals are all the same: we want to provide an environment for the creative individuals in the South Bay to converge, enjoy quality music, and find good company. Here we present: FIALTA!.

FIALTA! (fialta.bandcamp.com) This San Luis Obispo Quartet is playing their first performance in San Jose since they began in 2011. The band features Sherwood members David Provenzano (San Jose Native) and Michael Leibovich, as well as Beth Clements and Sarah Shotwell. Self-Described as “Indie Pop”, this band is unsigned, and I’ve yet to figure out why. They find balance between acoustic guitars and keyboards that hint towards a jazz influence that isn’t as obvious as it’s tone. Yet, it’s cleverly disguised as an acoustic pop song that is more complicated than they let on. If summer had a soundtrack, they’d be a power artist.

Special Thanks to Ryan, Arnel, Jason & Nick.

Daydream Nation will highlight our favorite alternative artists emerging out of the Bay Area and San Jose. Coverage of each event will be provided by both S*ALT(Savealternative.com) and Content Magazine (Content-magazine.com). Our goals are all the same: we want to provide an environment for the creative individuals in the South Bay to converge, enjoy quality music, and find good company. We present: Ben Henderson.

Benjamin Henderson-(www.facebook.com/benjaminhendersonmusic) I don’t think we have enough words to truly describe how we feel about Ben – as an artist, a songwriter, or just plain “dude”. He has been a staple of the San Jose music scene for many years, and when we first arrived in San Jose, he was the guy that “we had to see”….and we did. We immediately understood what all the fuss was about. He is a trained songwriter with the ability to pick up just about anything and play it, or write anything and sing it. His voice is a gift as much as a weapon-in strength and dynamism-it’s a soulful sacrifice of lyric and ability. We were so impressed with him, we actually invited him to head out on a full National Tour with one of the bands we work with, River City Extension (RCE). Ben will be touring 31 dates with them, playing bass for RCE and opening each show. Daydream Nation is his “farewell” show, only to return in mid July. Come wish him well, as we celebrate talent and opportunity. Homeboy ships out the first week of May.

(Look for the recipe in the next issue!) It was a great night of mingling with other San Joseans who share our vision for San Jose -- to discover and display the creative and innovative culture. (Look for the recipe in the next issue!) It was a great night of mingling with other San Joseans who share our vision for San Jose– to discover and display the creative and innovative culture. Thanks to everyone who came out!

Among the recipients of the SFFS/KRF Filmmaking Grants is San Jose resident Mohammad Gorjestani.

The San Francisco Film Society and the Kenneth Rainin Foundation announced on May 2, 2012 six winning projects in the seventh round of SFFS/KRF Filmmaking Grants. The grants are awarded twice annually to filmmakers for narrative feature films with social justice themes that will have significant economic or professional impact on the Bay Area filmmaking community. Congratulations Mo!

Mohammad Gorjestani, Malcolm Pullinger, Somehow These Days Will Be Missed, $33,000 for screenwriting
After years of being denied permission, the Etemadi family has finally been granted their visas to leave Iran. Mehdi, his wife Mina and their two kids are excited to start a new life in bustling Silicon Valley. But when they arrive, life is far from what they imagined. With their money quickly running out, Mehdi reluctantly turns to the dark world of illicit drugs, which ultimately proves to be his greatest awakening. For more information visit mkshftcllc.tv. (from sffs.org)

Mohammad Gorjestani is an award winning narrative, commercial and music video director, photographer, and creative director. In 2010 he founded MKSHFT/CLLCTV, a full blown creative collective. At MKSHFT he has been the lead creative and directed projects with Toyota, Gizmodo, The Lab Magazine, Visions Magazine, HTC, Scarub (Living Legends), and more. Currently, he is leading the creative development of an exciting interactive media start-up, in stealth mode.

As a filmmaker, his 2007 film “Sayeh” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival making him the youngest filmmaker in the competition. Sayeh later screened at over 25 international festivals and was later distributed by the BBC. He is currently developing his debut narrative feature film “Somehow These Days Will Be Missed”, inspired by actual events in San Jose in 1993. In May 2012, the project received the renowned and prestigious KRF Grant for screenwriting from the San Francisco Film Society. The film is set to move in to production in 2013.

Mohammad was born in Tehran Iran, immigrating to San Jose in 1988. He is a graduate of Cupertino High School (2002) and attended the Vancouver Film School (2006).

SaveAlternative.com & Content Magazine presents a new monthly music series, DAYDREAM NATION, that will commence on Saturday, April 28th at the San Pedro Square Market.

The event is rain or shine, and begins promptly at 7pm. Future Dates are May 19th, June 30th, July 28th, August 25th.

Daydream Nation will highlight our favorite alternative artists emerging out of the Bay Area and San Jose. Coverage of each event will be provided by both S*ALT and Content Magazine. Our goals are all the same: we want to provide an environment for the creative individuals in the South Bay to converge, enjoy quality music, and find good company. There will be projections by the San Jose Short Film Festival. Content Magazine will document this event, while SaveAlternative.com curates the music.

Saturday, April 28th
@ San Pedro Square Market
87 North San Pedro Street San Jose, CA

7pm Doors
8pm – The Shants
9pm – FIALTA!
10pm- Benjamin Henderson
11pm- Dogcatcher

The Shants- This backwoods four piece has been making noise since 2009 and hail from Oakland. With roots in Louisiana and Minnesota, The Shants sound was fortified in the concrete of the East Bay. Their acoustic songwriting style is tastefully accented by pedal steel, yet distances itself from country and leans closer to Americana. A wandering rhythm section, that allows the band to find its swagger between folk music and the early hum of Rock & Roll, haunts the songs. Their identity is found in their songwriting and not the instrumentation. Listen for yourself.

FIALTA! – This San Luis Obispo Quartet is playing their first performance in San Jose since they began in 2011. The band features Sherwood members David Provenzano and Michael Leibovich, as well as Beth Clements and Sarah Shotwell.

Dogcatcher – These cats from Mountain View first caught our attention by covering,”It’s a Man’s World” by James Brown.. yep. We were immediately drawn to Andrew Heine’s voice: effortless and delicate while being strong and lyrically smart. They are this extremely clever band that has a very soulful and almost beatnik profile that effortlessly jumps from acoustic to electric and to keyboard. Their subtle drum patterns keeps the songs busy and active, while the band dresses each composition in smooth and layered tones.

Benjamin Henderson- I don’t think we have enough words to truly describe how we feel about Ben – as an artist, a songwriter, or just plain “dude”.

By Mary Matlack

Karen McMillan Class is a fixer-upper. Eight years ago, after fixing-up two vintage Spanish Colonial homes in the Rose Garden, Karen stumbled on her current home in one of San Jose’s downtown neighborhoods, Naglee Park. “When I saw this house, that was it. It was to the point where if the right person didn’t get it, it was going to go so far down that it would never be able to be restored. The actual tile in the house is all handmade,” recalls Karen. “There were three tile companies in San Jose in the 20′s and 30′s and they were making tile right down on the Guadalupe. It was Handcraft, Stonelight and Fireclay. This house is all Handcraft.”
Spanish Colonial houses are Karen’s specialty and she traces this fascination back to the famous California fourth grade project – building a replica of a California mission. “I’ve always loved Spanish style furniture, adobe – it takes me back my fourth grade history class.” When she moved into her 1933 “termite tower”, Karen promised her husband the house would be ready in six months. It was a crazy time, but the result – all original and restored – is breathtaking. Her Spanish style furniture, the soothing earth tone walls with fanciful meringue-like plaster, the arched doorways and the three restored balconies are just about perfect, but when you see the handmade Handcraft tile, the house comes alive.
The handmade detail and the quality of the tile, after nearly 80 years of use in water-intense rooms of the house, is quite remarkable. Karen has taken every step possible to preserve the tile and strengthen the grout. All of the fixtures and the cabinetry have been chosen or preserved with the tile in mind. When a new sink interfered with the tile backsplash, the old sink was restored. Preservation was essential but it is her home, not a museum.
These days, Karen in busy preparing her home for the 2012 Naglee Park Vintage Home Tour hosted by the San Jose Woman’s Club (SJWC). Although Karen has been involved with the home tour for years, this is the first year her home has been a part of the tour. Six homes within a one-block radius will be on tour this Saturday April 21st from 10am to 4pm and tickets are available for purchase in advance or from the SJWC on Saturday.

And if taking a spot of tea while touring vintage homes sounds good to you, SJWC has a special by reservation-only formal tea planned during the tour. The Archdiocese of San Jose is opening up the garden of Bishop McGrath’s residence in the neighborhood and with spring finally in bloom, the Bishop’s classically inspired Mediterranean Villa-style house is in its full glory and a perfect garden for tea. Satori Tea will also be on hand with cool iced tea and scones for sale.

Naglee Park is located east of San Jose State and is considered to be the first modern subdivision in Santa Clara county. Subdivided in 1905, Naglee Park is a San Jose treasure and here’s your chance to take in intimate look-see!
