The Emerald Isle

Any celebration of Irish culture is apt to prominently feature music. To get in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day this year, Free Range Opera Theater is mounting a production of The Emerald Isle.

Don’t be frightened by the word “opera” in Free Range Opera’s name. The company performs “revivals of vintage musicals and operettas…for a cause,” which means that The Emerald Isle is actually “opera lite.” Arthur Sullivan’s last operetta is a comedy with English lyrics and will be performed in a staged concert format with an orchestra. No opera glasses required.

In this show, Irish peasants are rebelling against an Anglicizing re-education plan. The peasants convince an English lord and soldiers that an evil fairy will capture them if they enter the rebel stronghold. Comedy, music, and a little bit of magic make for an enjoyable and light-hearted way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Better yet, profits from ticket sales for this Free Range Opera “For A Cause” production will support the Mountain View Kiwanis Club and the global Kiwanis and UNICEF Eliminate Project to battle maternal and neonatal tetanus. So you can have fun and do good while enjoying the arts. It doesn’t get much better than that!

If your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations aren’t complete without a visit to an Irish pub, you are also in luck, because this performance is happening in downtown Mountain View. Within a few blocks, you will be able to find a couple Irish pubs, as well as the Mountain View Transit Center with Caltrain and light rail connections—which both broadens your options for post-show festivities and offers you a safe way to get home.

The Emerald Isle is rarely performed, so take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy a unique St. Patrick’s Day experience.
