Having coffee with Johnny Moore is a childhood thrill, since I attended San Jose Earthquakes soccer games during their early years at Spartan Stadium. Talking to Moore, the first player signed by the Earthquakes in 1974, also gave me a history lesson about the Earthquakes’ franchise and about San Jose.
Moore is passionate about the Earthquakes. He played in the midfield and as a forward during his four years with the team, and eventually became an Earthquakes assistant manager, general manager and even vice president. His insight into the business of the game is just as inspiring as his commitment to San Jose. He was inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 1997.
So with Moore’s long history with San Jose’s Major League Soccer team, it is fitting that he will attend the Earthquakes’ 40th celebration at San Pedro Square Market on January 30. Life has a way of circling around — San Pedro’s west building once housed the Earthquakes’ office.
