On Tuesday, January 27th Cinequest hosted their Media Launch party in downtown San Jose’s beautiful event space, The Glasshouse. Select members of the Bay Area’s press and media were invited to have an exclusive first look at what is in store at this year’s 25th anniversary of the Cinequest Film Festival.
Promo videos and exciting announcements unveiled just how captivating, buzzing, and vanguard this year’s film and event line-up will be. Over 100,000 people are estimated to attend Cinequest’s movie lineups, forums, VIP Soirees, and Maverick Meetups.
This year’s 25th Anniversary Cinequest will present 91 world, North American and U.S. film premieres, from 50 countries across 205 screens, and will have over 700 artists and innovators present from around the country.
The Opening Night Screening and Celebration will be held on February 24th at 7:15 pm in downtown San Jose’s California Theatre, with Batkid Begins, director Dana Nachman’s riveting documentary, chronicling the amazing community response to a child cancer patient’s desire to be a superhero for one day and to “save” San Francisco. The Closing Night Screening and Celebration will also be held at the California Theatre on March 8th at 6:00 PM. Join Mad Men writer/director Victor Levin and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) for a screening of the romantic comedy 5 To 7. This will be followed by a blowout bash at the Glass House.
Barco Escape Films, presented at Cinequest 25, is not to be missed. Audiences will have an entirely new cinematic experience: a chance to watch films across three screens of images. This will include an immersive viewing of a Lady Gaga concert with Tony Bennett, a Burning Man short, and six other shorts.
Director and co-founder of Cinequest Halfdan Hussey’s reminded the mingling, excited crowd that Cinequest is not just a unique film showcase, but a supporter of technological innovation and emerging young artists around the globe.
“This is about celebrating the creator and the innovator. It is the belief that you can create your own dream,” Hussey told the media. “It is not only about pushing the envelope, but of democratizing opportunity.”
One of the many forums for young and seasoned minds alike will be An Evening with Rosario Dawson on February 28th at 7:30 PM at the California Theatre. Cinequest will announce the Maverick Spirit Award recipients on February 14th. Past recipients have been Harrison Ford, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Chuck Palahniuk.
“What I love about Cinequest is that it concentrates on not just the personal, but also the exterior.” Ozzie Perez, a Cinequest PTP Editor told us. “The films explore what is going on the world right now, topics that are relatable to us at this moment.”
